GENERAL ASSEMBLY

UNESCO: PROTECTING GLOBAL CULTURAL HERITAGES IN CONFLICT ZONES

We are eager to announce that our JACMUN 2025 General Assembly Committee I theme will be “UNESCO: Protecting Global Cultural Heritage in Conflict Zones.” This vital and timely committee will focus on the critical role that countries and international organizations play in safeguarding invaluable cultural heritage during times of war and conflict. As armed conflicts devastate communities and erode their historical legacies, the need to recognize and protect cultural heritage becomes increasingly urgent. Such heritage serves not only as a symbol of identity for communities but also as a pillar of global unity, reminding us of our shared history and values.

Throughout this conference, delegates will engage in thoughtful discussions that explore a range of legal, political, and practical strategies for protecting cultural assets. Key topics will include the necessity of fostering international cooperation among nations, as well as the role of military interventions that prioritize the preservation of cultural sites amidst chaos and violence.

Additionally, the issue of accountability will be paramount, as delegates will examine the mechanisms through which nations can be held responsible for the destruction of cultural heritage. This includes addressing the pressing matter of establishing no air-strike zones around significant cultural sites to shield them from military actions. Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss the effectiveness of various sanctions against countries that willfully damage these important sites, weighing the ethical implications and practical outcomes of such measures.

This committee promises to foster robust dialogue on how nations can collaboratively ensure the protection of cultural heritage, emphasizing the shared responsibility we all hold in preserving our global history for future generations. By engaging in this critical conversation, delegates will not only work towards actionable solutions but also deepen their understanding of the intersection between culture, identity, and conflict.
